When Laura asked me to write her “About the Artist” blurb, I
found myself at a real loss. In fact, it has taken me quite some time to
even get started. How do I explain all of the things that make Laura tick,
as an artist, or even as a person? The truth is, I can’t. And although I
will fail miserably, here goes.
Laura, as an artist, is what I personally would call
internally creative. There is more creativity and originality in her head
than in any person I have ever personally known. She can look at a scene, a
room, a wall and see exactly what should be there. I’ll look at the same
scene and say “No way, it won’t fit, it doesn’t go,” and invariably, I’m
wrong. It always fits, it always goes. She has a true gift for space, for
color, for placement.
So why do I say internally creative? Sometimes it takes just
the right moment, just the right spark or push to get the inspiration out
and into the world that everyone else can see. It’s always there, but not
for everyone to see. That’s why I was so excited when Laura said “I want to
start creating again.” Ah, the internal creative was once again to be
unleashed…and this time it was inspired by a somewhat different source.
In 2000, Laura and a few other saints started a dog rescue
group for the Austin
area. Like many, Laura entered the world of rescue a bit naïve, a bit
unaware of the overwhelming problem facing most of our cities. Too many
dogs, not enough homes. Seven years and over 1200 dogs later,
Blue Dog
Rescue has inspired Laura. Inspiration in life often leads to inspiration
in art. So began metalsgirl.com.
Metalsgirl.com began as a collection of work mostly
inspired by that special light and spark that is given to us by our pets.
Lucky for us, these wonderful creatures allow us to love and care for them
and in return they share that unconditional love only found in our pets’
eyes. Wearable art for our pets led to more art for people, and so it
all continued until Metalsgirl was a reality.
I hope you enjoy the site and the art,
Tom Gibson – the man lucky enough to call Laura his wife.
